    OT: Vintage speaker score

Why don't we start a thread of vintage speaker scores?

Frazier Manhattans, just picked up today.

I couldn't find a lot of information. I believe they are EV drivers. 8" woofer and it looks like a 3" paper cone tweeter with a single 3uF cap as a crossover.

They actually sound pretty good. For $50 I figured the well-made cabinets were worth the price of admission.

Nice!! So, if its 8 ohms for both, the tweeter is crossed at 6500 hz and that woofer can go that high?

Bear in mind the tweeter reaches -6db at 3250 one octave below...

    Re: OT: Vintage speaker score

They've been playing for over an hour and I can hear them opening up. Judging by how much dust I blew out of the cabs, they were likely sitting for a long time. They really sound nice!

I guess I should at least replace the caps. Question is, should I build a proper crossover, or leave the design stock? Wait...bi-amp!!

I have to say look much more like Utah than EV...look for numbers stamped on the frames

    Re: OT: Vintage speaker score

No frame #s on the Blue. This was stamped on the frame gasket:

    9

    And I have a cone #

    10

Someone over on the Frazier Users Group (believe it or not) thinks it might be a Quam or CTS

BTW, when I went to bolt it back onto the baffle I noticed the sound cutting in and out and very dependent on how tight the mounting nuts were. Too tight and no sound. Too loose, no sound. While there was no sound if I touched the cone it would play. Loose VC wire? Any ideas for recones on these?

Agree with Tom, I don't think any chance of Quam, to me casts doubt on the guy who said that...and CTS rarely had the can cover over the mag

Shall we take a look at an OEM Utah?

    15 for Radio Shack

    14

I offer as evidence- magnet cover, plastic gasket under it, look at the frame- then tell me you don't believe it is your speaker's big brother.

Close, but I'm not convinced. Bells are pretty much all the same. The Jensen and Celestion bell looks just like mine. This Jensen with a white gasket would be just like mine.

The vent holes in the Utah are not the same shape as mine either. The Utahs are wider toward the rim and narrow closer the the magnet. Mine are fairly uniformly elliptical.

I just picked up these off ebay for $20 as backups:

These are the Quams that were mentioned.

I might look for some Altec 403As as a comparison.
